Over the past few years, I’ve had the amazing opportunity to work closely with micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) in Bogor—a city known for its cool weather, green landscapes, and, now, rising entrepreneurial spirit.
At first glance, many of these businesses seemed like any other local shops: home-based food producers, crafters, small-scale clothing sellers, and traditional service providers. But behind every small business was a passionate individual or family pouring their heart into what they do. What they needed wasn't just funding or motivation—they needed a way to adapt to the fast-changing world. That’s where digital adoption came in.
Starting the Digital Conversation
When I first introduced the idea of going digital—using social media, setting up an online store, joining digital payment platforms—many business owners were hesitant. Some had never used a smartphone beyond WhatsApp. Others feared they weren’t "tech-savvy" enough. So we started small.
I organized relaxed, community-based workshops where we’d sit together, drink coffee, and walk through simple digital tools step by step. We focused on what mattered most to them: how to get more customers, how to manage orders easily, and how to market their products online without spending too much.
Real Progress, Real People
One of my favorite success stories is from a mother-and-daughter duo who ran a homemade sambal (chili sauce) business. Before going digital, they sold mostly to neighbors and friends. With some training, they started using Instagram, Tokopedia, and Shopee. A few months later, their sambal was being shipped to other cities in Java—and eventually even reached customers in Kalimantan and Sulawesi. The joy on their faces when their first out-of-town order came in? Unforgettable.
Another inspiring case was a local tailor who had always relied on walk-in customers. We helped him create a digital catalog of his custom designs, and within a few weeks, he was receiving orders from Jakarta clients who found him through TikTok!
What I Learned Along the Way
Supporting MSMEs isn’t about throwing technology at them—it’s about listening, understanding their daily challenges, and introducing tools that actually fit their workflow. It’s about celebrating small wins, being patient with slow progress, and building confidence bit by bit.
Most importantly, I learned that digital transformation is not just about business growth. It’s about empowerment. When an MSME owner realizes they can compete, grow, and dream bigger because of digital tools, that’s when the real transformation happens.
Looking Forward
Bogor is full of potential. The more we support local entrepreneurs to embrace digital change, the stronger the local economy becomes. I'm proud to be part of that journey—and even more excited for what’s ahead. There are still many MSMEs waiting for their moment to level up. And I’m ready to walk that road with them, one click at a time.
