Day 1 – Arrival in Medan with a Mission
I landed in Medan with more than just travel in mind. My main purpose for this trip was to lay the groundwork for a new tempeh production factory in Deli Serdang, about 35 minutes from Kualanamu International Airport. This factory will be supported directly by Rumah Tempe Indonesia, which serves as the leading center for tempeh innovation in the country. It’s a big step, and I’m excited to bring this vision to life.
After arriving, I checked into a hotel near the heart of the city and took a short walk around Merdeka Walk. The atmosphere was vibrant, filled with food stalls and friendly faces. For dinner, I tried soto Medan—rich, creamy, and full of flavor. A perfect start to my journey.
Day 2 – Exploring Culture and Possibilities
With meetings scheduled for the next few days regarding the factory, I made some time to understand the cultural backdrop of this beautiful region. I visited Maimun Palace and the Great Mosque of Medan, both stunning representations of the city’s rich history. What truly struck me, though, was the harmony among people of different backgrounds. Medan is known for its cultural diversity and religious tolerance, and I could genuinely feel that in every interaction I had.
Day 3 – A Glimpse of Nature at Lake Toba
I took a break from business to explore one of North Sumatra’s natural treasures: Lake Toba. The long ride to Parapat was worth it. The lake was serene, with clear blue water framed by rolling green hills. A short ferry ride brought me to Samosir Island, where I saw traditional Batak houses and experienced the hospitality of the local people. It was peaceful, reflective, and reminded me why investing in this region felt so right.
Day 4 – A Deepening Connection with Medan
Back in Medan, I visited local markets and had the chance to see Tjong A Fie Mansion—an incredible example of cultural harmony and entrepreneurship from the past. I also finalized some plans for the factory site. Everything is falling into place. Before leaving, I had a hearty meal of nasi padang, sampling as many dishes as possible.
Reflections
This journey wasn’t just about building a factory. It was about building connections—with people, with culture, and with a city that has a lot to offer. Medan and the surrounding areas have inspired me deeply. The kindness, openness, and spirit of the people here are what make this region special. I feel honored to be starting something new in a place that feels so full of possibility.
