Strengthening National Resilience: The Role of Indonesian MSMEs and My Journey in Empowering Them

In Indonesia, Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs)—locally known as UMKM—are more than just economic contributors. They are the heartbeat of the nation’s resilience. Across islands, cities, and rural landscapes, MSMEs support livelihoods, drive local economies, and offer hope in times of economic uncertainty. As someone who has had the privilege of mentoring and supporting thousands of MSMEs across Indonesia, I’ve seen firsthand how transformative this sector can be—especially when equipped with the right tools, knowledge, and opportunities.

MSMEs: The Foundation of Indonesia’s Economy

Indonesia is home to more than 64 million MSMEs, making up over 99% of all business units in the country. They contribute around 60% of Indonesia's GDP and employ more than 97% of the national workforce. In times of global crisis—be it a pandemic or economic downturn—MSMEs have repeatedly proven to be shock absorbers, ensuring economic activities continue, especially at the grassroots level.

Embracing the Digital Era

In the last few years, I’ve worked closely with MSMEs through various national programs aimed at bridging the digital divide, particularly under the UMKM Level Up program led by the Ministry of Communication and Information Technology (KOMINFO). Through this initiative, we’ve supported MSMEs in transitioning from traditional business models to digitally savvy enterprises—teaching them how to use social media, e-commerce platforms, digital payments, and online branding.

I’ve had the honor of walking alongside small business owners—from rural bakers to craft artisans—guiding them as they took their first steps online. Many of them had never imagined they could sell beyond their local market. Today, some of them are running thriving businesses that reach customers across Indonesia—and even beyond.

From Local Heroes to Global Players

Digital literacy is just the beginning. Through my role in the Export Readiness Program (PPEJP) by the Ministry of Trade, I have been part of a national effort to prepare outstanding MSMEs for international markets. This includes providing training in export documentation, product standards, international marketing, and logistics.

Helping MSMEs understand the export process is a powerful experience. Many of them start off thinking, “I’m just a small business, who would buy from me?” But with the right support and confidence-building, they begin to see that their products—rooted in Indonesian culture and quality—have global appeal. From organic food products to handcrafted goods, many MSMEs are now stepping onto the world stage as proud representatives of Indonesia’s creativity and entrepreneurial spirit.

Building Resilience Through Knowledge

What I’ve learned through these experiences is that resilience is built through empowerment. When MSMEs gain access to knowledge—whether digital or export-oriented—they become more than survivors. They become innovators, leaders in their communities, and contributors to national strength.

Looking Ahead

Indonesia’s future is closely tied to the strength of its MSMEs. By continuing to invest in their capacity—through digital transformation, access to global markets, and ongoing mentorship—we’re not just growing businesses. We’re building a more inclusive, sustainable, and crisis-resilient economy.

As someone who has been blessed to play a small part in this journey, I remain committed to supporting MSMEs wherever I can—because when MSMEs thrive, Indonesia thrives.

Aksi Kebaikan Tak Terduga

Persis seperti stereotip pria Inggris zaman dahulu ketika hendak ...
