Exploring Solo: A Journey Through Culture and Tempeh Innovation

Indonesia is a vast archipelago filled with hidden cultural gems, and my recent trip to Solo—officially known as Surakarta—was a beautiful reminder of just how rich and diverse the country truly is. Nestled in Central Java, Solo is a city that embraces its royal heritage while moving steadily into the future. But what made this journey even more special was the chance to explore Karanganyar, a neighboring area in the Solo Raya region, where tradition and innovation come together in the most delicious way.

Solo: Where Tradition Lives On

My journey began in the heart of Solo. From the moment I arrived, I could feel the city’s strong cultural identity. The streets were lined with batik shops, traditional markets, and historical sites like Keraton Surakarta (the royal palace) and Pura Mangkunegaran. Everywhere I went, I was greeted with warmth and hospitality, and it was clear that Solo’s cultural roots run deep.

What struck me most was how the city balances old and new. You can witness a wayang kulit (shadow puppet) performance one moment and sip coffee in a hip modern café the next. Solo feels like a city that knows exactly who it is—and is proud of it.

A Short Trip to Karanganyar: A Tempeh Experience

Just a short drive from Solo, I headed east toward Karanganyar, a peaceful area known for its natural beauty and agricultural life. But I wasn’t here just for the views—I came to visit a tempeh production site that collaborates with Rumah Tempe Indonesia, a center for tempeh innovation.

Tempeh has always been part of the Indonesian culinary soul, but what I saw here was next-level. Rumah Tempe Indonesia supports small producers with knowledge, technology, and standards to make high-quality, hygienic, and sustainable tempeh. It’s not just about making food—it’s about preserving a cultural legacy while improving food security and nutrition.

At the production site, I had the chance to see the fermentation process up close. From soaking the soybeans to the final wrapping stage, the attention to detail was inspiring. What impressed me most was how this small-scale operation was empowered by Rumah Tempe Indonesia to meet international food safety standards without losing its traditional essence.

More Than Just a Food Tour

This wasn’t just a foodie trip—it was a cultural experience. Tempeh is more than a protein source here; it’s a way of life, a community effort, and a symbol of sustainability. Learning how something so humble can become a global innovation was eye-opening.

As I left Karanganyar and returned to Solo for the evening, I carried more than just souvenirs—I took with me a deeper appreciation of local wisdom, innovation, and the spirit of collaboration.

Final Thoughts

If you’re looking for a travel experience that offers more than just sightseeing, I highly recommend exploring Solo and its surrounding areas. Whether you’re a culture lover, a history enthusiast, or a food explorer, there’s something incredibly grounding about being in a place where heritage is honored, and the future is nurtured.

And next time you eat tempeh—remember, it may have come from a small town in Java with a big vision for the world.

Entrepreneurial Marketing: What I Learned from Building a Business and Teaching in the Classroom

I didn’t first learn marketing from textbooks. I learned it from the field, from small failures, limited resources, and decisions made with more courage than certainty. Only later did the term Entrepreneurial Marketing begin to make sense, because it perfectly described what I had been practicing all along. As both an entrepreneur and a lecturer, I live in two worlds that are often seen as separate: practice and theory. In reality, they constantly inform and strengthen each other. Building a Business Taught Me What Marketing Really Means When I started my business journey, I didn’t have a large marketing budget or a dedicated team. What I had was a product, belief, and the determination to survive. Every marketing decision began with a simple question: what can I do today with the resources I already have? Many strategies were not born from complex market research, but from direct conversations with customers, feedback from partners, and real-time market responses. I experime...
